Understanding Dry Eye
Your tear film health plays an essential role in dry eye. Dry eye can be triggered when something goes wrong with your tear production or the glands that create tears become inflamed.
Your tears are made of 3 layers:
- The oily outer layer
- The watery middle layer
- The inner mucus layer
During your appointment, we can examine your eyes and determine a treatment method to address the underlying cause of your symptoms.
Our Dry Eye Treatment Methods
Dry eye is a chronic condition, typically caused by a combination of various factors. During your in-depth dry eye exam, we will work to identify the root causes of your symptoms and develop a personalized treatment plan to provide you with long-lasting relief.
Our targeted treatment methods include IPL, radiofrequency, blepharo exfoliation, amniotic membrane therapy, serum tears made from your own cells, and more. Learn more about our treatment methods.
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Using InMode Lumecca & Lumenis
Intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy was initially developed for use in dermatology. It is a powerful way to treat meibomian gland dysfunction.
During the treatment, light pulses are used to help liquefy blockages in the meibomian glands. Often, these blockages are caused by solidified meibum (oil) made by the glands. IPL softens this debris, allowing it to be expressed. The light also targets inflammation, which frequently plays a role in dry eye disease.
We utilize the Lumenis Optima IPL and InMode Lumecca, and the treatment is performed right in our office.
Radiofrequency Treatment Using InMode Forma-i
Radiofrequency (RF) treatment utilizes energy waves to heat the surrounding area of your eyes and unclog the meibomian glands. This treatment can help relieve dry eye symptoms by using electromagnetic waves.
By gently heating your eyelids, RF helps liquefy the oils that clog the meibomian glands. Your optometrist may massage the treated area to help release any trapped oils.
We use InMode Forma-i for dry eye treatment. RF treatment is safe for all skin types when performed by a professional.
Blepharo Exfoliation Using AB Max
Keeping the eyelids clean is essential to maintaining eye health and moisture, particularly if you suffer from blocked meibomian glands. An in-office, advanced cleansing procedure for the eyelids, AB Max helps remove plaque and debris from the eyelid margin, thereby keeping the meibomian glands free from blockages.
Unimpeded meibomian glands can produce the oil layer more effectively needed for high-quality tears.
Most patients report no discomfort during AB Max treatments. During your diagnostic exam, we will recommend an appropriate interval between regular treatments for optimal results.
Meibomian Eyelid Gland Expression
Meibomian gland expression is performed by a skilled optometrist who applies pressure to the upper and lower eyelids where the glands are located. The pressure helps to squeeze out any debris or blockages.
This procedure is simple and takes place in-office. It works well after an IPL treatment has softened blockages.
Amniotic Membrane Therapy
Amniotic membrane therapy is a bit like a bandage for your eye. It uses a biologically rich membrane, derived from human tissue, to promote healing and reduce inflammation on the surface of your eye.
This natural material contains essential growth factors that repair damaged tissue, making it particularly effective for severe dry eye or persistent corneal injuries. The membrane is placed directly onto your eye and securely covered with a contact lens, allowing it to nourish and restore your eye over a few days. This treatment helps soothe irritation while supporting your long-term eye health.
Serum Tears Therapy
Serum tears therapy uses your own blood to create natural, healing eye drops that nourish and repair the surface of your eyes.
Also known as autologous serum eye drops, these personalized eye drops are rich in growth factors and vitamins, closely mimicking the composition of your natural tears. After a small blood draw, the serum is processed and diluted to create a gentle yet powerful treatment for chronic dry eye.
This innovative therapy helps restore moisture, reduce irritation, and support your eye’s ability to heal itself.
Signs You Could Have Dry Eyes
When evaluating you for dry eye, we look for specific symptoms and risk factors.
Dry Eye Symptoms
Many patients with dry eye experience some or all of the following symptoms, typically in both eyes:
- Stinging, burning, or scratchy feeling
- Gritty feeling, like something is in your eyes
- Eye redness
- Watery eyes
- Blurred vision
- Eye fatigue or tired feeling
- Light sensitivity
- Difficulty driving at night

Dry Eye Risk Factors
Some people are at a greater risk of developing dry eye than others. If you fit into the following categories, you could have an increased chance of developing dry eyes.
- Age: Dry eye occur naturally as we age. Most people over the age of 65 will experience symptoms of dry eye.
- Gender: Women are more likely to develop dry eye due to hormonal changes brought on by menopause, pregnancy, and birth control.
- Medications: Several medications can decrease tear production, leading to dry eye, including antihistamines, decongestants, blood pressure medications, and antidepressants.
- Medical conditions: Autoimmune diseases like Sjogren’s syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, and lupus can increase your risk for dry eye. So can diabetes and thyroid conditions.
- Contact lens use: Contact lenses can interfere with the distribution of tears over the eyes, although your optometrist can recommend specialty contacts if you have dry eye.
- Laser eye surgery: Laser eye surgery like LASIK can interfere with tear production, although this side effect is often temporary.
