Treatments that Target the Root Cause

Once we’ve diagnosed dry eye, we’ll take a closer look at what’s actually causing it. That way, we can recommend the treatments that are most effective for you.

If your symptoms are linked to meibomian gland dysfunction (a common cause of dry eye), we may suggest therapies like IPL, radiofrequency treatment, or meibomian gland expression—all designed to restore healthy tear flow and bring you lasting relief.

In some cases, a combination of treatments may be needed, depending on the complexity of your condition. We’ll also schedule follow-up appointments to track your progress and adjust your care as needed—because relief shouldn’t be one-size-fits-all.

Lumecca-I IPL by InMode: For Dry Eye

When the skin and glands around your eyes become inflamed, it can lead to a cycle of chronic irritation—including conditions like ocular rosacea, blepharitis, and meibomian gland dysfunction. These issues can feed into each other, making symptoms worse over time.

Lumecca-I IPL therapy helps interrupt this cycle by targeting inflammation, improving the function of your meibomian glands, and helping your eyes produce natural, healthy tears—often reducing or even eliminating the need for artificial drops.

During your IPL treatment, we’ll protect your eyes with special intraocular shields (similar to contact lenses) that sit gently over the eye’s surface. Then, we apply the IPL light to the skin around your eyelids, where inflammation tends to be most active.

Radiofrequency Therapy with Forma-I

Radiofrequency (RF) treatment uses safe, controlled energy waves to gently heat the skin around your eyes, helping to unclog your meibomian glands and get your natural tear flow working again. The warmth helps to liquefy thick, hardened oils that may be blocking your glands. After treatment, your optometrist may gently massage the area to release any trapped oils and restore proper function.

At Luminance Vision, we use Forma-I, an innovative RF device designed specifically for dry eye. It precisely targets problem areas, stimulating tear production and helping to rebalance moisture on the surface of your eyes.

RF therapy is noninvasive, comfortable, and safe for all skin types when performed by a trained professional.

Meibomian Gland Expression

Meibomian gland expression is a quick, in-office procedure performed by a skilled optometrist. By applying gentle, targeted pressure to the upper and lower eyelids, we help express built-up oil and debris from the meibomian glands, clearing blockages and allowing the glands to function normally again.

This treatment is often most effective when done after IPL therapy, which softens the thickened oils and makes expression easier and more comfortable.

Eyelid Exfoliation

Keeping the eyelids clean is essential to maintaining eye health and moisture, particularly if you suffer from blocked meibomian glands. An in-office cleansing procedure for the eyelids, AB Max helps remove plaque and debris from the eyelid margin, helping to keep the meibomian glands free from blockages.

Most patients report no discomfort during AB Max treatments. During your diagnostic, we will recommend an appropriate length of time between regular treatments based on your needs.

Punctal Plugs

Punctal plugs are tiny, biocompatible devices—about the size of a grain of rice—inserted into the tear ducts (either upper, lower, or both) to help retain natural tears on the surface of your eyes.

By slowing tear drainage, punctal plugs keep your eyes moist for longer, reducing dryness and discomfort. They’re nearly invisible, and the insertion process is quick, safe, and typically very well-tolerated.

We offer both temporary plugs, which dissolve naturally over time, and semi-permanent plugs, which sit a bit deeper in the tear ducts and can be removed if needed. Your optometrist will help determine the best option based on your symptoms and tear flow.
