How Long a Typical Eye Exam Takes
Your appointment covers everything from checking in to reviewing your results with your optometrist. For returning patients, that often lands closer to 30 minutes. We already have your history on file, so we can spend more of the visit on your eyes.
Your first appointment usually takes longer. Your optometrist will want to learn about your eye health and how you use your eyes each day, whether that’s long hours on a computer or weekends outdoors. That conversation shapes the rest of the exam, so we don’t rush it.
What Affects the Length of Your Visit
Your visit length depends on a few things. You may need extra time if:
- It’s your first visit with us
- You’re older, since the risk of glaucoma and other eye conditions goes up with age
- You’ve noticed new symptoms like blurry vision
- You have a family history of eye disease
- You have diabetes, which can affect the blood vessels in your eyes
When something new comes up, your optometrist may add a few tests to learn more about what you’re feeling. Those checks help us understand what’s going on so we can recommend the right next step.
How Dilation Adds Time to an Eye Exam
Your optometrist may use dilating eye drops to widen your pupils. With your pupils open, they can get a clearer look at your retina and optic nerve at the back of your eye.
The drops take about 30 minutes to work, so a dilated exam can add an hour or more to your visit. Whether you need dilation depends on your age and eye health, and your optometrist will let you know ahead of time when possible.
Afterward, your vision may stay blurry and your eyes may feel sensitive to light for several hours. Close-up tasks like reading tend to be the hardest. Pack a pair of sunglasses and ask someone to drive you home if you can.
What Happens During Your Eye Exam
Your appointment starts with your health history and a few preliminary checks. The team asks about medications, daily screen time, and anything that’s been bothering you.
Next comes the heart of the exam. You read letters on a chart, look through different lenses during refraction, and have a quick pressure test. Before you leave, your optometrist will go over the results with you. Bring up anything you’re unsure about. We’d like you to walk out understanding your eyes a little better than when you came in.
Extra Steps for Contact Lens Wearers
If you wear contacts or want to try them, plan for another 15 to 30 minutes. Contacts sit right on the surface of your eye, so your optometrist measures its curve and size to find a lens that fits comfortably.
You’ll also try trial lenses before you commit, which lets you feel the fit and test your vision with them in. If you’re new to contacts, we’ll show you how to put them in and take them out.
